THE GAZA POWER STATION - A MOVING IMAGE

GAZA CITY | MIDDLE EAST | MEDITERRANEAN

Gaza is a special place, a city with thousands of years old culture. Surrounded by refugee camps since 1948.

Gaza is a cultural field of force, a cluster of a potential energy which has been accumulating since 1948.

THE GAZA POWER STATION

Power stations are comparable to wells
from where people draw water,
to quench their thirst.
The question arises:
What sort of energy do we need
to quench our thirst?

Gaza is a special place,
a city with thousand-year-old culture
surrounded by refugee camps since 1948,
nucleus of an emerging state,
a place that is a living witness,
to one of the greatest human catastrophes
in our century.

All this could set the course,
for a development,
which goes far beyond the possibilities
visible at the present.

Gaza is a cultural field of force,
a cluster of energy,
which has been accumulating since 1948.

From the developing potential of the individual
This power station can be generated.
All depends on initiating the kinetic impulse
in the turbine.

Everyone is called upon
to engrave his thoughts,
fears, hopes,
rage and desperation
in the turbines of the power station.

Thus let this power be converted into movement, into this energy,
which we all need
to quench our thirst.

Only the turbines of our hearts
Can drive development onwards.

WHY ENERGY HAS BECOME A QUESTION OF SURVIVAL.

The Palestinians, now in their third generation, have been living in refugee camps since the Arab-Israeli War of 1948.

The work refers to this situation.

In one of the central squares in Gaza City a walk-in sculpture formation is being created. Inside the installation big copper tablets inlaid in the columns of concrete give visitors the opportunity to engrave their comments in the soft copper. At night these personal notes are then projected in gigantic size onto the formation.

At the center of the Gaza Power Station there is the ”turbine-body”, covered by a copper plate in which a sentence hammered out in Arabic writing reads:

ONLY THE TURBINES OF OUR HEARTS CAN DRIVE DEVELOPMENT ONWARDS.

Gaza Power Station

A Moving Image

As a reaction to the dramatic change of the situation since the beginning of the 2nd Intifada, the GAZA POWER STATION will at first be set up as a mobile sculpture formation.

Five completely identical arrangements, each consisting of four large copper plates, will give visitors in Gaza, Jerusalem, Vienna, Geneva and New York an opportunity to scratch their comments on the situation into the soft copper metal. At night these personal notes will then be projected onto the formation in an overdimensional feature.

In the centre of the GAZA POWER STATION – A MOVING IMAGE there is the “turbine body”, covered by a copper plate into which a sentence has been hammered in Arabic letters:

ONLY THE TURBINES OF OUR HEART CAN DRIVE DEVELOPMENT ONWARDS.

The copper plates will [after a certain period of time] be exchanged between Gaza, Jerusalem, Vienna, Geneva and New York.

Work in progress

In cooperation with the Municipality of Gaza City, this project has been in the planning process ever since 1999 (being postponed due to the 2nd intifada).
